The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR XI) together with Nature’s Spring Foundation Incorporated (NSFI) and Magsaysay Marketing Cooperative (MMC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at the DENR Regional Office Conference Room on July 26, 2023 for the prioritization of planting of indigenous/endemic species and high valued crops that are suitable to the identified area like Cacao and Lipote as its commodities. The MOA signing was graced by Regional Executive Director, Atty. Ma. Mercedes V. Dumagan, NSFI Program Manager, Ms. Marife S. Piñero, and MMC BOD Chairman, Mr. Teodoro Rudaje, Sr.
The agreement involves the identification of 25 hectares of land for the implementation of the 5-year project from 2023-2027 located in Barangay Magsaysay, Marilog District, Davao City with the distribution of 5 hectares per year.
The collaboration is not novel for the NSFI as they have partnered with various POs across the country a few years back. The NSFI being true to its corporate social responsibility has collaborated with the environment sectors in contributing to resource rehabilitation through nationwide reforestation with its Watershed Area Transformation for Environmental Resilience (WATER) Reforestation Project.
On the other hand, Magsaysay Marketing Cooperative (MMC), as one of the partner Peoples Organizations (PO) of the DENR in the implementation of the Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP), has acknowledged the significance of the technical and financial assistance from external sources in order to help their members and their cooperative in becoming self-sufficient. As part of its initiatives, they venture into other enterprises which was sourced out from the proceeds they earned in the projects awarded to them. Thus, chosen as recipient of the project, the MMC expresses its willingness and commits to religiously implement and participate for the success and sustainability of the program.
RED Dumagan expressed her gratefulness to the DENR personnel, NSFI and MMC for their commitment as the program will not just benefit the community but will help restock the region’s vegetation that were waned over the years.
“I am hoping that cooperation such as this one continues to emanate willingly from all of our offices and reminding us that in order to truly contribute to nation-building, our environment comes with utmost priority, and that only through our collaboration can we take the much larger step towards a nation enjoying and sustaining its natural resources, with a clean and healthy environment,” RED Dumagan said.
DENR, NSFI and MMC recognized the importance of collaboration and partnership in order to achieve the objectives of the ENGP, and agreed to work hand in hand, consistent with the objectives and requirement of their respective mandates and programs. Other officials present during the event were ARED for Technical Services Forester Victor T. Billones, Davao del Sur PENR Officer, Alberto Bandiola, and Davao City CENR Officer, Juvy C. Hofileña.
