7 25 Mabini PLSMabini, Davao de Oro - LGU Mabini, Davao Gulf Divers (DGD) and DENR Davao de Oro successfully organized a "Bisita Kadagatan" on July 23, 2022, to look for innovative ways in preserving the beauty and integrity of Mabini Protected Landscape and Seascape (Mabini PLS) which is one of the protected areas in Davao Region.

During the event, a lecture on the basic concepts of ridge-to-reef approach, laws of nature, and the importance of coastal and marine ecosystems was handled by Dr. Girley S. Gumanao, Vice President for Academic Affairs of Davao del Norte State College, followed by a presentation on the basic profile of Mabini PLS and the existing programs and projects implemented in the protected area steered by DMO II Clint Michael B. Cleofe of PENRO Davao de Oro.

Mr. Iñigo Taojo, President of DGD, emphasized the need to strictly protect the rich coral reefs surrounding Kopiat Island, which is also the home of the Barramundi Cod (Chromileptes altivelis) as the flagship species for Mabini PLS. During the event, he allowed the use of the DGD's 90-footer dive and rescue boat including the SCUBA equipment, and provided a team of technical divers to guide the participants in closely assessing the present state of reefs in the area.

Mayor Emerson "MM" Luego of Mabini vowed to actively support the programs, projects, and policies for the betterment of the said protected area likewise dubbed as the "Jewel of Davao Gulf".

Apart from being a protected area, the good mayor also envisions it as a reputable ecotourism destination in Davao Region. He exudes optimism that a strong collaboration between and among the DENR, DGD, local communities, and other stakeholders shall materialize the said aspiration.

Penultimately, PENR Officer Rita Fe C. Gunn appreciated the eagerness and proactiveness of LGU Mabini in preserving Mabini PLS. In support of the thrust by the local government, she bared the upcoming programs and projects to be implemented in the protected area such as the promotion of biodiversity-friendly enterprises, establishment of wastewater filtration systems, and the conduct of carrying capacity study, among others.

The said activity was attended by all Department Heads of LGU Mabini, and the members of the Sangguniang Bayan led by Vice Mayor Halima Muñoz.
