To further strengthen the partnership of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region XI with the lumber dealers and Wood Processing Plant Operators in Davao City, a tree planting and information drive activities were conducted last December 3, 2022 at Davao Region Upland Agriculture Research Station (DARUARS) in Barangay Marilog, Davao City.
The activity was initiated by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Davao City in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Davao Lumber Dealers and Wood Processing Plant Operators. This was also participated in by representatives from different foreshore leases, Barangay Council, Women’s Organization of Brgy. Colasas as well as some residents of Sitio Ilian in Brgy. Marilog.
During the activity, early Christmas gifts such as clothes and grocery packs among others, were also given to the residents of Sitio Ilhan who are also labourers of DARUARS.
Davao Region is known to be one of the country’s timber corridors where first to second growth forest frontiers still thrive. The influx of lumber dealers and wood processing plants (WPP) in the city has contributed to its economic growth of which its permits and needed documents are strictly being monitored by DENR-XI through CENRO Davao City.
DENR Regional Executive Director Bagani Fidel A. Evasco said that with DENR’s mandate, the Department exerts its best efforts in monitoring the compliance of all wood-based businesses ventures in the city, even those coming in and out of its area of concern.
“We are ensuring that WPPs and lumber dealers will strictly observe existing forestry laws, rules and regulations,” RED Evasco said.
Moreover, the Department is also introducing interventions to help the wood-based business proprietors by engaging them to environmental causes such as tree planting and information drive activities. Through this, they will be more concerned in replenishing the nature and be well-versed about environmental issues and how to address it.
Presently, the Davao City Lumber Dealers and Wood Processing Plants is on its preliminary preparations proposing for cooperative initiated by different wood-based industries and foreshore lessees in Davao. The proposed cooperative is supported by the DENR in order to easily monitor their compliance to environmental standard and uphold holistic and strategic sustainable practice.
