The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) fosters the use of high-quality planting materials in the establishment of tree plantations, tree farms, forestation and other reforestation activities. It is to favor biodiversity conservation and forest restoration likewise in consonance to the government's pursuit of sustainable production and supply of forest products in the country.
To hit such target, and through the recommendation of the DENR- Ecosystem Research and Development Bureauβs Agroforestry, Research, Development and Extension Center (ERDB-ARDEC), PENRO Davao Oriental currently undergoes a two-week re-inventory and re-grading of some identified Individual Plus Trees (IPTs) established in the maintained Seed Production Area (SPA) located at So. Botac, Brgy. La Union, San Isidro, Davao Oriental.
The endeavor pushes to carry off continuous production and adequate supply of phenotypically-observable characteristics and genetically-improved planting materials to meet the requirements for high quality seeds and seedlings.
The operation looks on natural stands, existing forest and private tree plantations which are potential sources of seeds and planting materials. It shall then be identified, surveyed, delineated, assessed and evaluated based on the given standards.
Through a team of assessors composed of bantay gubat and local researchers, together with the PENRO and Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary-Protected Area Management Office (MHRWS-PAMO) Foresters and forest technicians, the classification of stem and branch traits such as straightness, forking, circulatory, tree health, and branch angle, as well as its thickness and persistence are keenly gauged aside from the typical diameter at breast height (dbh) and total height measurement.
The seeds collected are being germinated on the DENRβs nurseries, which, upon reaching success, these will then be used on the establishment and development of tree plantations, reforestation projects, and rehabilitation of watersheds and coastal habitats. Depending on availability, the seedlings can also be distributed to the stakeholders in support to their reforestation initiatives.
Some of the species that were re-graded were πππππ’πππ πβππππ ππππ¦π πππππ (Dipterocarp), π΅ππ‘πππβππ πΆππππβπ¦πππ’π πππππππ and ππππππ πΏππ‘βππππππ’π ππππππ ππ (Furniture/Construction Hardwood) and πΏππππ‘π ππππβπ‘ππ πππππ‘π, a premium species.
DENR Administrative Order No. 2010-11, dated May 5, 2010, or the Revised Regulations Governing Forest Tree Seed and Seedling Production, Collection and Disposition, provides for the fundamentals to hold up the quality standards of establishing, maintaining and protecting the existing and potential SPAs. Thus, the conduct of said operation.
