As a part of his environmental endeavor in Northern Luzon, Department of Environment and Natural Resources XI Regional Executive Director Bagani Fidel A. Evasco went to visit some spots in Baguio City which were revamped into Ecologically Sustainable places. One is the Irisan Dumpsite, a dumping-area-turned-ecological-park and the Busol Watershed which is one of the city’s major sources of potable water.
Irisan Dumpsite was once an open dump in the city, but, by virtue of the writ of kalikasan and continuing mandamus, it was then converted into an eco-park.
RED Evasco believes that "Irisan Eco-Park would make an exemplary model for Davao City Landfill and for the rest of the dumpsites in Davao Region. That would definitely be the future we would love to see."
The Busol Watershed and its rockfall protection system on the other hand is an eco-sustainable and effective natural hazard mitigation in Busol Watershed, Baguio City. The watershed’s rockfall mitigation system is one of the city’s innovations that RED Evasco believes can be replicated in Davao Region when it comes to maintaining watersheds for the benefit of the present and future generations.
Meanwhile, the director paid a courtesy call and convened with Baguio City Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong to express his delight on how the good Mayor revitalizes the city’s environment by aggressively invoking his constituents to adhere to solid waste management as well as the Local Chief Executive’s noteworthy environmental innovations.
Maximizing his visit, RED Evasco also met Zambales Governor Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr. and had a discussion about responsible mining and how the mining operations should be designed to secure optimal net benefit for the citizens with as much as low social and environmental impact.
RED Evasco along with other top officials of DENR-XI fled to Luzon in the early days of November 2021 for various environmental agenda.
