At least 30 species of avian and 5 other fauna species were logged during the conduct of Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS) in Mt. Apo Sibulan Circuit Trail, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur last February 18-20, 2021.
The team, led by Sta. Cruz Senior Tourisms Officer Julius Paner, patrolled a total of 19 kilometers straddling So. Tumpis and So. Garuc which are within Mt. Apo Natural Park’s Strict Protection Zone.
Philippine Brown Deer, Civet Cat and Long-tailed Macaques are the fauna species that were directly observed or personally seen by the team while the presence of Philippine Warty Pig was observed through its traces and manure.
Meanwhile, MANP remains a pivot of avian community as a number of species were directly catalogued, Philippine Bulbul having the most number followed by Mindanao Racquet-tail. Others include the MANP endemic Apo Myna, Mindanao endemic Apo Sunbird, White-cheeked Bullfinch, Warbling White-eye, Brown Tit-Babbler, Sulphur-billed Nuthatch, Island Thrush, Yellow-bellied Whistler, Long-tailed Shrike and several others.
The data collected during the conduct of BMS is vital in reviewing and improving the conservation efforts especially in the country’s protected areas.
