City of Mati, Davao Oriental – The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Mati under the leadership of CENR Officer Zaldy Lumaan strengthened its effort to combat the illegal trade of endangered plants within its area of responsibility through the hanging of streamers/posters that contain information on wildlife conservation, in conspicuous locations of identified areas such as public markets where the said illegal activities are likely to occur.
The streamers are one of the office’s means of continuously reminding the public to refrain from illegal trade of endangered plants, a venture which heightened during the lockdowns brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Selling, buying or any forms of trading of wildlife without a permit is prohibited and is punishable under RA 9147 otherwise known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001.
CENRO Lumaan also underscored the importance of maintaining a constant watch to ensure the protection and conservation of wildlife even in times of an unprecedented national health emergency such as the COVID-19 pandemic and even holiday breaks.
He also emphasized that collaboration with key stakeholders and partner government agencies is crucial in a concerted effort to curb wildlife trafficking in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental.
