Tahara essay writing contest resizedTambuco of Mati National Comprehensive High School is this year's Champion of the 5th MakakaLIKHAsan Environmental Essay Writing Contest held today, November 22, at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-XI) Regional Office, Lanang, Davao City.

With the theme "Capacitating the Youth to Build Climate-resilient Philippines", the said contest was participated in by a total of 20 schools.

Other winners are Sheila Marie Pangan of Rizal Memorial Colleges as 1st Runner-up and Alyssa Ilaguison of Panabo National High School as 2nd Runner-up. All winners received a cash prize, a plaque and a medal.

MakakaLIKHAsan Environmental Essay Writing and Photography Contest is a yearly event of DENR-XI participated in by high school students from both public and private schools within Region XI. It is already on its 5th year as the event was launched last 2013.

This aims to showcase the talents of the students in writing and in photography as well as heighten their level of awareness with regards to the many environmental issues the world is facing today.

"Most importantly, as we are trying to heighten their awareness, we are also hoping that through this event, we can encourage them further to continue to be our partners when it comes to environmental protection and climate change mitigation," said Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO) Chief Jayvee Jude Agas.

The MakakaLIKHAsan event which is being conducted by RPAO is in line with the celebration of the National Climate Change Consciousness Week from Nov. 19-24. SMARTSeas Partners’ Forum Held

10-9 smartseas phTo provide a venue to exchange experiences, innovative ideas and community-based initiatives to enhance effectiveness of the marine protected areas (MPAs), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Philippines and Global Environment Facility (GEF) are currently conducting a three-day SMARTSeas PH Project Partner’s Forum at the Ritz Hotel at Garden Oases, Davao City.

SMARTSeas PH Project is a five-year project that aims to strengthen the conservation, protection and management of key marine biodiversity areas in the Philippines. It also includes the establishment of biodiversity-friendly enterprise as sustainable livelihood to coastal communities.

Anchored on the theme “People and the Sea”, the forum which will run from October 9-11, 2018, is participated in by the MPA managers and practitioners from SMARTSeas project sites, partners from the local and national government agencies, civil society organizations, academic, research institutions, and private sector working on the protection and conservation of the coastal and marine environment.
