EMB-XI Conducts ESWM Summit 2017

With the themedenr 11 davao press release - emb-xi conducts eswm summit 2017 web "Sustaining the Shared Responsibility in Waste Management", Environmental Management Bureau of Region XI conducted a 3-day Ecological Solid Waste Management Summit from September 20-22, 2017 held at Ritz Hotel, Davao City.

The Summit, which aims to intensify the role of local government units in the implementation of their Solid Waste Management Plan, was attended by 180 participants from different LGUs including National Government Agencies, Non-government Organizations, Academe and other stakeholders.

The event was graced by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and Governor Anthony G. del Rosario of Davao del Norte along with the different Municipal Mayors and Vice Mayors.

Some of the topics discussed during the three-day event were Philippine Environmental Laws, Status of Compliance of the LGUs to their respective 10-year Solid Waste Management Plans, the significance of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and use of Alternative Technology Products. The Role of the Commission on Audit (COA) in the monitoring of ESWM implementation was also discussed.

Another highlight of the Summit was the granting of funding assistance to the different LGUs of the region. Monetary assistance amounting to PhP 482,500.00 was each awarded to the municipalities of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Governor Generoso of Davao Oriental; Jose Abad Santos of Davao Occidental; Laak, Comval Province; and Montevista, Comval Province for the establishment of their respective Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) or Shedder.

Moreover, Municipalities of Banaybanay and Lupon of Davao Oriental as well as Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental were also awarded with PhP 332,500.00 each for their MRF establishment. Other municipalities that were given monetary assistance amounting to PhP 150,000.00 for the establishment of their respective Shedder were Baganga, Davao Oriental; Saranggani, Davao Occidental; and Mawab, Comval Province.

On the other hand, for the maintenance of their Public Market, a grant amounting to PhP 190,000.00 was awarded to the municipalities of Magsaysay and Malalag as well as to Digos City of Davao del Sur.

Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 mandates all the LGUs to prepare its 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan in consistent with the Solid Waste Management Framework. The Plan shall give emphasis on the implementation of all feasible reuse, recycling and composting programs while identifying the amount of landfill and transformation capacity that will be needed for solid wastes which cannot be reused, recycled or composted.

The Plan shall be reviewed every two years by the Provincial, City or Municipal Solid Waste Management Board. #tayoangkalikasan


3 Foreigners Arrested for Illegal Possession of Endangered Tree Species

Three5-17 press release - 3 foreigners arrested for illegal possession of endangered tree species resized foreigners were arrested last week by the joint team of National Bureau of Investigations (NBI), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Bureau of Immigration (BI) officers in a hotel here in Davao City for illegal possession of endangered tree species. 
A Cambodian national and two other Malaysian nationals were caught by surprise when operatives from the NBI XI and officials from DENR XI and BI XI came to their hotel room last May 10, 2018. The three were arrested for violation of Section 77 of Presidential Decree 705 as amended by Executive Order No. 277, and Executive Order No. 23 or the Moratorium in the Cutting of Natural Grown Tree Species.
