Mindanao-wide Confab for Indigenous People Held

A 2-day Mindanao-wide 8-mindanao-wide confab for indigenous people held resizedConference on Indigenous Cultural Communities was recently held in Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), Davao del Norte conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in collaboration with the Indigenous Peoples Conference of the Philippine, Inc. (IPCPI).  
With the theme “Fighting Climate Change and Ensuring Socio-Economic Development”, the Mindanao-wide Conference on Indigenous Cultural Communities’ Socio-Economic Development Innovation and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategy seeks to address various environmental issues and socio-economic development concerns of the IPs within Mindanao.
The event was participated in by Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous People (ICC/IP) leaders from Regions 9, 10, 11, 12 and the Caraga Region. 
In her message that was delivered in Mandaya and B’laan dialects, DENR Regional Director Ruth M. Tawantawan said that one of the priorities of President Rodrigo Duterte is to give development opportunities to the lumads as he understands their plight very well.
“Mindanao’s chance to prosper has now come.  Now is the time to hear your small voices and be heard by majority.  Now is the time to claim what historically belongs to you because the highest leader of our nation has his heart for the lumads’ upliftment,” she said.
Tawantawan also said that under the leadership of DENR Secretary Gina L. Lopez, the Department will ensure socio-economic development despite the overwhelming negative impacts of Climate Change.  “We resonate the call of our DENR Secretary for social justice that whatever we have in Mindanao should be enjoyed and be cherished by the Mindanaoans especially the IPs.”
On the other hand, IPCP Executive Vice President Timuay Sofronio C. Cabatuan differentiated Ancestral Land Domain with Public Land during his presentation.  He also discussed further about the securing of FPIC which is stated under Republic Act No. 8371 or the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997.
During the first day session, the ICCs and IP leaders signs a manifesto to show their unwavering support to President Rodrigo R. Duterte and DENR Secretary Regina L. Lopez for helping the IPs in the protection and conservation of watershed areas within the Ancestral Domain.  Through the signing of the manifesto, the ICCs and IPs are also calling for the confirmation of Secretary Lopez for her exemplary leadership in the DENR.
Topics discussed during the event are: status of E-NGP for Region XI; Integrated Micro-Solid Waste Resources Recovery; Mandates of the National Commission of Indigenous People (NCIP) on ICCs/IPs Eco-Development among others.   


DENR-XI celebrates Women’s Month 2018

“We press release - denr-xi celebrates womens month 2018 resizedMake Change Work for Women” is this year’s theme for Women’s Month. This said theme, which shall be used from 2017 to 2022, highlights the empowerment of women as active contributors to the claimholders of development of which in pursuit of development, it is anchored on the commitment of “Malasakit at Pagbabago” or True Compassion and Real Change.

It also emphasizes that women should be active drivers in bringing about positive changes which can be made possible by empowering women and enabling them to engage with other development stakeholders.
