Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Director Ruth M. Tawantawan recently met with City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Lisa T. Madrazo to discuss and seek its support on the implementation of DENR's Sustainable Integrated Area Development Management (SIADM) in which one of Region XI's pilot sites is Marilog District, Davao City.
SIAD is one of the pillars of governance in the conservation and management of environment and natural resources. Its implementation will involve convergence with stakeholders like the civil society organizations, academe, networks of environmentalists, private sectors and government agencies. It aims to improve the communities' quality of life by establishing integrated area development-based models and showcase their best practices.
For the implementation of SIADM, DENR has identified 29 priority areas nationwide. Selection of these areas were based on its communities within major river basins and critical watersheds, environmental condition and significance, vulnerability to climate/disaster risks, high poverty incidence and its potential for ecotourism among others.
In Region XI, there are 8 priority areas identified namely: Marilog District in Davao City; Mt. Apo Natural Park in Davao del Sur; Talaingod in Davao del Norte; Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental; Pujada Bay Protected Landscape and Seascape in Davao Oriental; Aliwagwag Protected Landscape; Ngan Panansalan in Compostela Valley Province and; Mainit Hotsprings Protected Landscape. Of these areas, DENR-XI will pilot Marilog District and Mt. Hamiguitan, hence activities for these areas will start soonest.
Madrazo expressed her optimism on the successful implementation of SIADM and vowed to support the project for it aims not only to conserve the environment but it also considers the socio-economic impacts on the community thus alleviating poverty.
For Marilog District, there will be 276 households that will be tapped, all of which are members of 5 People's Organization (POs). A bamboo plantation will be established in the area and some areas will also be planted with cacao, rubber, fruit trees and timber under the National Greening Program. Other activities to be included are distribution of vegetable seeds to the households, rehabilitation of Multi-Purpose Building in Brgy. Marahan, provide Horticulture trainings and establishment of parks and esplanades to name a few.
DENR-XI has already scheduled a convergence meeting with the local government units and some National Government Agencies to present to them the rationale and overview of SIADM and discuss further the different strategies of its implementation.
