June is Environment Month

The month of June of each year is declared as the Philippine Environment Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237 signed in 1998 by then President Corazon C. Aquino.

This year’s theme is “Green Economy: Does It Include You?” which emphasizes the need of the communities to shift into more environment-friendly, low-carbon and resource-efficient approach such as using bio-degradable products and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals.

During the celebration, various important events will also be celebrated such as the World Environment Day on June 5, Philippine Eagle Week on June 4-10 and Philippine Arbor Day on June 25.

To kick off the celebration in Region XI, DENR will hold a motorcade on June 1, 2012 at 6:30 in the morning from SM City, Ecoland to DENR-XI Regional Office in Lanang, Davao City.  The motorcade will be participated in by other government agencies, business sectors and academe among others.  A Thanksgiving Mass and short program will immediately follow after the motorcade which will be held at DENR-XI Quadrangle.

DENR Regional Executive Director Jim O Sampulna said that aside from the motorcade, there will be many activities lined up by the regional and provincial offices to drumbeat the celebration such as tree and mangrove planting, coastal clean-up, estero clean-up and information campaign focused on Climate Change mitigation among others.

The Environment Month Celebration will also be highlighted by a sports competition among DENR-XI personnel both from the Regional and field offices including its line bureaus such as Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) and Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (MGB). (DENR-XI PR)
